A SALMON AND TROUT FISHING ADVENTURE ON GEORGIAN BAY

From May to October, guests have the opportunity to jump aboard Collingwood Adventure Voyages by OSM Adventure Travel for salmon and trout fishing charters out of Collingwood Harbour located on the southern tip of Georgian Bay in Simcoe County. Captain Kevin Johnston has been operating OSM Adventure Travel for over 12 years and offers a variety of on-the-water experiences to his guests including: fishing charters, boat cruises, shipwreck snorkeling tours, and more. I recently had the opportunity to get out on the water with Kevin in pursuit of salmon and trout and had a great experience all around!

The Nottawasaga River offers unique fishing opportunities, particularly for rainbow trout (steelhead). This river is accessible year-round due to its catch-and-release zone, making it a popular destination for anglers. Fishing tournaments, such as the Georgian Triangle Salmon Slam, attract numerous participants and generate significant revenue for the local economy.

The health of the river is crucial for both the fishery and the local economy. The river boasts high water quality and excellent habitat conditions that support various fish species. Restoration efforts, including fixing bank erosion and improving fish habitats, are essential for sustaining the river’s ecosystem. The Nottawasaga River Restoration Program (NRRP) aims to restore 10 km of degraded stream habitat, enhancing water quality and fish habitats. These efforts also provide benefits for flood and erosion control.

The Nottawasaga River flows through significant environmental features such as the Niagara Escarpment and the Minesing Wetlands, making it a vital recreational resource and a critical source of clean water. The river supports sport fisheries, which are economically important for local municipalities. Native species like brook trout and river burbot, as well as species at risk such as lake sturgeon and northern brook lamprey, rely on the river’s healthy waterways.
