Bringing History to Life

Take steps back in time at one of Simcoe County’s immersive live history sites with costumed interpreters, hands-on activities and interactive tours for a uniquely memorable experience. Step onto the docks of Discovery Harbour in Penetanguishene Bay, used as a strategic military establishment for the War of 1812, and permanent home to the remains of the H.M.S. Tecumseth. Experience the region’s most notable battle site of the War of 1812 as the Nancy Island Historic Site. Walk through the living grounds of Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, the headquarters for the French Jesuit Mission to the Wendat people as Ontario’s first settler European community.

Doors Open Simcoe County is an annual fall event where visitors have the opportunity to look behind closed doors and find hidden historic gems throughout the region. During Doors Open, join a guided walking tour with the Penetanguishene Centennial Museum, Collingwood Downtown Walking Tours, Barrie Historic Downtown Walking Tours and more. Throughout the year, find self-guided tours through local museums and municipalities.

Explore one of many Simcoe County museums and enrich the ways in which you see things.  Walk the outdoor exhibits and historic buildings at the Coldwater Museum, Simcoe County Museum, and Fort Willow. At the Huronia Museum take time to experience the recreated Ouendat Village as it would have lived before the arrival of European settlers. Visit notable historic sites like the Oro-African Episcopal Church Historic Site, one of the Canada’s oldest Black heritage sites; the Mnjikaning Fish Weirs, Martyr’s Shrine, and the Coldwater Heritage Mill.
